Co-besties turned bitter enemies is the story that WWE seems to be telling with Shane McMahon and The Miz. It is a familiar tale from their archives; unlikely allies briefly coexist to achieve a modicum of success before it all goes wrong and they turn on each other.

WWE had the chance to do something different with this pairing though. There was great long-term potential to a storyline whereby Miz uses Shane to get him to the top of the SmackDown Live tree, and eventually the WWE Championship, but instead the narrative has been rushed to end their tag team title reign at Elimination Chamber, after only 21 days.

This sets up a heel turn and a singles bout at WrestleMania, because Shane O’Mac just has to be on the card. In his three 'Mania appearances since his return, all of McMahon’s matches have been over 15 minutes in length, including the longest match at WrestleMania 32 when his Hell in a Cell match against The Undertaker went for over half an hour.

The Miz seems a strange choice of opponent considering he is not the type of worker to carry a part-timer to a good, long match, à la AJ Styles or Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn of previous years, but he is a truly exceptional heel so hopefully this prominent storyline will lead to better things for ‘The A-Lister’, than what the last six months have brought him.
