1. Robocop - WCW Icon
While again we point out that WWE has been absolutely woeful in its use of celebrities in recent years, at least by and large the celebrities have been themselves rather than the characters they play in their respective mediums. For some reason though WCW thought it would be great to do the opposite of this and create odd storylines, or simply enhance regular storylines, by utilising fictional characters playing themselves in the real world. The first example of this was the legendary Robocop affair at Capital Combat 1990. For those few of you unfamiliar with this glorious piece of wrestling history well bring you up to speed. Robocop 2 was being released in 1990, so naturally WCW figured that itd be wise to pair up their baby face superstar Sting, with the fictional character to help him combat the threat of the Four Horsemen. Vignettes had been aired on WCW television showing Sting and Robocop teaming together, but vignettes are only one part of wrestling storytelling, and the fans hoped against hope that WCW wouldnt actually go through with having the two team up live. Of course WCW ignored their wishes and at the Capital Combat PPV when the Four Horsemen had Sting locked in a giant bird cage (?) it was Robocop that broke Sting out in a spot that can only be described as insulting and humiliating for all involved. Ric Flair, considered in many circles to be the greatest pro wrestler of all time, had to cower in fear at the sight of some guy wearing a birthday party quality Robocop suit, in a segment no doubt missing from his top ten proudest moments in wrestling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Afr0xwde0Aw What was going on in the mind-set of those in WCW, well never really be able to conceive of or understand. Well thats not quite true. We know they saw money for some reason, we just dont understand why. But at least after this legendary failure the suits who would run WCW in later years had learned from Jim Herds mistake and didnt try anything like this again. Until 1998 that is. Having somehow forgotten that as much as wrestling fans are aware that what they are watching is predetermined, they still dont like feeling like complete morons for supporting a company, WCW tried to blur the lines between fiction and reality. This time Rick Steiner was the lucky individual to have his memory tarnished as he got into a verbal altercation with the doll Chucky from the movie Childs Play (or to be specific the sequel Bride of Chucky which was being released at this time). Yes Chucky. A murderous doll. At least Robocop was tall we guess? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hz1DHgdVKeE Chucky was there to warn Rick Steiner not to get in the way of Rick Steiner during their upcoming bout at Halloween Havoc. Why? It was never explained. But Chucky broke the fourth wall talking about his love scenes with Jennifer Tilly in the movie, and plugged the flick in a way that was about as subtle as a jackhammer. So the point of this whole thing was for the audience to somehow believe that Chucky was real and wasplaying himself in the movie? Its really hard to try and make sense of it. The fact that Chucky had an opinion on who hed rather see emerge victorious out of Rick and Scott Steiner is arguably the least confusing aspect of this (mercifully) brief storyline that went beyond odd, and into the idiotic.
