2. A Cage Match On Raw
Another noteworthy occurrence on this week’s Raw - the go-home show before Clash of Champions - was the main event meeting between Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns. Most significantly though, this turned out to be a Steel Cage match, and not only that but an unannounced Steel Cage match.
Regardless of the end result, or of any details such as who kicked out of who’s finisher, this one felt like a positive to me for the sheer unexpected element of the announcement.
Foley’s decision to make the main event a cage match added a much needed dose of excitement to the prospect, and clearly I wasn’t the only one who thought so because the news got a pretty solid pop from the Memphis, TN crowd.
At the risk of sounding like a jaded old fan, this was somewhat reminiscent of the old days in which Raw was chaotic, unpredictable, and when it actually felt like a show in which anything could happen.
If they’re going to maintain that attitude and continue to create the illusion that they’re shaking things up on the cuff, then that surely bodes well for the future. Now we just need Seth Rollins to hit the ring on a Zamboni and hose down the bad guys with a shower of Crossfit protein shakes...
