10 PPV Quality Wrestling Matches Given Away On Weekly Television In 2020
1. AJ Styles Vs. Daniel Bryan (Intercontinental Title Match) - SmackDown, 12 June
A singles bout between AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan is not merely a pay-per-view quality wrestling match; it is a match between two of the best wrestlers of their generation. These two could main event any promotion's biggest PPV of the year and it would not be out of place. This is how you elevate your mid-card title.
In the tournament for Sami Zayn's vacated Intercontinental Championship, Styles and Bryan met in the finals and put on a clinic, demonstrating their technical wrestling abilities, excellent work rate, and brilliant storytelling. It was an odd choice to put this match in the middle of the card - those participating in the 6-man tag team main event certainly didn't benefit from it - but WWE bookers were wise to give these two superstars nearly 40 minutes to fight for the Intercontinental Championship.
Styles and Bryan went back and forth trading submission holds, demonstrating their high flying abilities and laying in some stiff strikes. In the final moments, Bryan tried to put Styles away with his running knee, only to be caught in mid-air and hit with the Styles Clash. Styles then finished Bryan off with the Phenomenal Forearm to claim the IC Title.
This was a Match Of The Year candidate and it's easy to see why. Styles and Bryan are exceptionally gifted wrestlers who are unparalleled in WWE when it comes to putting together a match. The next time these two fight, it should be on The Grandest Stage Of Them All.
