We should have known. We should have bloody known. WWE doesn’t start interesting mystery angles with a plan in mind. There is no long term story that will slowly unravel over months. It is of course a make-it-up-as-you-go-along thing and if one day Vince decides there’s not enough in it to make something up, then it gets dropped like WCW’s ratings in the late '90s.

The Hacker was no different. It all started with a series of mysterious glitches that affected the SmackDown programming on a weekly basis. As weeks progressed, it went from barely noticeable to lasting a number of seconds so as to grab everyone’s attention. The man in the hood eventually appeared one episode and revealed he had non-stop surveillance on everyone. RIP constitutional rights.

Finally he went from ominous presence to an active player in the proceedings by getting involved in the Otis-Dolph-Mandy storyline. It was only thanks to his hacking that Sonya Deville’s dastardly plot was unveiled and Otis and Mandy could be together.

Speculation swirled as to who could be underneath the hood. Names like Ali, Karrion Kross and a host of others were floating about. And what was the final result of it all? Nothing. After a while WWE just pretended this whole thing never existed and moved on.
