Before any team steps in a wrestling ring, they need to know one another’s bad habits. For instance, if one member is a hot head, that information should be shared fairly early on. If one member of a tag team is easily distracted by the opposite sex, you should probably disclose that.

Anything that could spell disaster for the team during a match, whether it be a phobia, an aversion to taking high risk maneuvers, or having the innate desire to show off, needs to be put on the table as soon as possible.

Furthermore, you need to play to your strengths in order to hide one another’s weaknesses. Most tag teams in WWE’s history are homogenous, meaning that both guys bring the same strengths to the table. For example, The Usos for all intents and purposes have the same skill set.

Same goes for Edge and Christian, The Hardys, The APA, The Dudleys, The Road Warriors, etc. That being said some tag teams are at their best when they are in symbiotic pairings. For instance, if one wrestler isn’t a great talker, he should probably have partner who is.

If one guy is a powerhouse who lacks mobility, his ideal partner would be somebody agile and quick. Their strengths compliment one another.

Both examples of pairs are trying to do the same thing, which is downplay their weaknesses either by doubling down on their collective strengths, or by entering into a symbiotic unit. Identifying these weaknesses and figuring out how to downplay them is without question an important part of forming a tag team, and one that needs to be addressed from jump street.
