10 Reasons Why DDP Was The Original People’s Champ Of Wrestling
5. The Lone Wolf
Throughout the majority of his WCW run, DDP was seemingly always the lone wolf fighting against the pack (or “Wolfpac” as it were) of the nWo. Despite sporadic teams with short term partners - usually celebrities as part of a one-off gimmick match - the Jersey native would see most of his run from ‘96 to ‘99 as a solo practitioner.
Similar to that of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin in WWF at the time, DDP stood in defiance of the established power, namely the New World Order; feuding with the likes of Randy Savage, Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash. As opposition for the nWo, DDP would win several singles titles, including the United States and WCW Championships, both in matches involving the nWo. DDP’s very last WCW match was fittingly also for the WCW Championship, a loss to former New World Order member, Scott Steiner, at WCW Greed in 2001.
As WCW entered the new millennium, DDP began to change his ethos, first forming The Jersey Triad with fellow New Jersey natives, Bam Bam Bigelow and Chris Kanyon, before forming a short-lived alliance with Kevin Nash as The Insiders. However, despite these short-term allegiances, DDP is best remembered for his solo duties opposing the New World Order in the late 90s.
