10 Reasons WWE Might Bring Back The World Heavyweight Championship

6. The History

On the subject of the Benoit / Guerrero moment as World and WWE Champions at Mania 20, that was just one of many historical moments in the two belt history. Indeed, the Big Gold Belt itself can trace its roots back all the way to 1985, when it replaced the NWA Heavyweight Championship at the request of Jim Crockett Jnr. Others say that its roots stem back over one hundred years, when you consider the lineages it absorbed. In this respect, it's the oldest championship in the world, one that WWE shouldn't throw away. When Ted Turner later bought Jim Crockett Promotions and got WCW underway, the big gold belt became synonymous with the major southern promotion. Great moments involving the likes of Flair, Sting, the NWO and Goldberg all revolved around the World Heavyweight Championship. WWE would be honouring that history by bringing the belt back. Fans don't recall the dark days of the title, they remember the bigger moments. That would help give WWE's current product prestige, the company could bring the title back in vignettes celebrating the storied history. More recently, the WWE version of the big gold belt was active from 2002 to 2013. Even that history is full of worthy moments that the belt can be associated with. Men like Triple H, Batista, Edge and The Undertaker made the belt mean something. Why not use that history to reintroduce the title and give WWE's wrestlers a piece of glory to chase?
