1963. That is when Buddy Rogers became the first WWE Champion, although at the time it was the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship. Since then it's been through more than its share of ups and downs including that embarrassing phase when it thought it needed to spin, but at its heart, it is still that same belt and that's a lot of history.

What doesn't have that history is the Universal Title. Not only does it have a name that makes you want to puke but to the people on the street, it means nothing. If you tell someone who hasn't watched wrestling in ten years who the WWE Champion is they will nod knowingl. Talk about the Universal Champion, and they'll probably laugh behind your back.

The WWE Title is important, and that's all there is to it. It doesn't matter who wins the Universal Title until it can boast that same pedigree; it is not in the same league.
