10 Ridiculously Ambitious WWE Ideas That Failed Horribly
7. The Lex Express
"What does it take to be a hero?" went Lex Luger's glorious, criminally under-utilised theme "I'll Be Your Hero" - an '80s power ballad expected to get over in the grunge-drenched '90s. An '80s power ballad so overblown that Trey Parker couldn't even make it more ridiculous.
What does it take to be a hero?
Larking about in a bus as a second-rate rent-a-Hogan and not appearing on WWF television, apparently. Luger's was such a weird and expensive push. He essentially toured the land after body-slamming Yokozuna, otherwise doing the sum total of nothing to get over as a pro wrestler. Who was this guy, really? A buff charity worker on a hand-shaking expedition? Wasn't he hopelessly in love with himself just last week?
The histrionic footage heralding Luger's arrival was even funnier. The Lex Express emerged, obscured by waves of hear, from the horizon. Hope is on its way, children. Hope is on its way.
The very title "I'll Be Your Hero" is wonderfully optimistic. "I'll be your American hero! Me, Lex Luger! I'm ripped like Hulk Hogan, and I wear massive baggy American pants! Do you...do you want me to shoot something?"
