3. vs. Davey Richards - GHC Junior Heavyweight Championship (Supercard Of Honor IV)
Mere weeks after his title challenge against Nigel, KENTA had a title of his own to defend: the GHC Junior Heavyweight Championship. His opponent was one of ROHs fastest rising stars, Davey Richards. It took place in Houston, TX, on Wrestlemania weekend. Despite KENTAs inclusion in the match, both men were apparently supposed to have a normal type of match. For those that dont know the history, ROH fired booker Gabe Sapolsky the preceding October. Sapolsky was known for booking matches that steal the show. Under the new ROH booking structure, head by wrestler Adam Pearce, the main events were the most important part of the show. The main event of this evening was Nigel McGuinness defending the ROH World Title against Jerry Lynn. Therefore, that match should be the one where the wrestlers go all-out. KENTA and Davey didnt listen, and went out and had what many consider to be the best match of the year. It went back and forth with both men taking huge bumps, including KENTA taking a brainbuster from the ring apron to the floor, a spot that had the people in the crowd chanting, F*ck Wrestlemania! The ending was botched, basically because KENTA and Davey went so all-out during their match that KENTA was too exhausted to hit a Go 2 Sleep, but they had made their point. The crowd chanted Match of the Year immediately after it was over. The match was a throwback to a bygone era of ROH that many fans had clamored for since Sapolskys departure. The story goes that KENTA and Davey were reprimanded as soon as they went through the curtain, but it didnt matter. The match made the show one of ROHs best-selling DVDs that year.
