1993 was the first year that the Royal Rumble winner would go on to secure a guaranteed WWF Title shot at WrestleMania. That format is now a Rumble tradition, one that even stayed during periods when the company had more than one World Title up for grabs.

In late-1992, Yokozuna had emerged on the horizon as a new top heel in the promotion. Seeking the chance to ready the gargantuan villain for a 'Mania IX tussle against Bret Hart for the top belt, WWF officials had Yoko thump 'Macho Man' Randy Savage during the closing stretch of the '93 Rumble match itself.

For the first time since debuting, Yokozuna was taken off his feet by Savage. Inexplicably, the babyface then went for a pin on his larger opponent, leading to the impressive visual of Yoko pressing Randy upwards and over the top rope to the outside.

It was rather strange of the WWF to expect that fans would buy a veteran like Savage making such a rookie mistake. Despite Yokozuna's definitive victory, this was a rather embarrassing end to the Royal Rumble.
