10 Saddest Times Wrestlers Couldn't Finish The Story
2. Lex Luger
He was destined for greatness, until they pulled the plug.
Back in 1993, when Hulk Hogan left WWE, Lex Luger went through a big change. He turned face and started going by nicknames like "Made in the USA," "The All-American," and "American Original." On July 4th, he did the most 'Merica thing possible: arriving on the USS Intrepid by helicopter and body slamming the massive WWE World Heavyweight Champion and classic non-American villain Yokozuna. Others had tried and failed before him.
After that, Luger kicked off the "Lex Express" tour. Picture this: a red, white, and blue bus going all around the country, meeting fans as he geared up for a title showdown with Yokozuna at SummerSlam 1993. It was Lex's only shot at the gold so he simply had to win. Something big was coming for Luger, until it wasn't.
In the match, Lex used a metal plate in his forearm and eventually won. Except the victory was a countout, so Yokozuna held on to the title. That didn't stop him celebrating with the rest of the WWE roster like he'd just taken the strap for all of America. Fans looking back make fun of this moment, but the reaction in the arena was massive. Sadly, they were celebrating America more than Luger and his push quickly ended.
This story was more of a chapter; Lex went to World Championship Wrestling and won the world title there, but he never finished what he started in WWE.
