Perro Aguayo Jr.’s in-ring death was the very definition of a freak accident.

Universally regarded as one of Mexico’s strongest heels, Aguayo was working a tag team match for Konnan’s The Crash promotion in March 2015. Rey Mysterio used a headscissor takedown to launch him out of the ring during the match, but Perro rolled back inside. Mysterio then dropkicked him as a setup for the 619 and Aguayo landed on the middle rope as intended.

Unfortunately, Perro took a disastrous landing. He suffered cervical spine trauma on impact, and immediately became unresponsive. Konnan was ringside at the time and tried to revive Aguayo, but he still wasn’t moving, and was pronounced dead at the age of 35 years old just a few hours later.

The cause of death was announced as a cardiac arrest caused by three fractured vertebrae, with the fractures taking place at two separate moments of impact. A catastrophic outcome from a seemingly innocuous move, and one that prompted a brief criminal investigation.

Fortunately, the incident was found to be a complete accident, and Konnan and Mysterio both served as pallbearers at the funeral.
