In 2016, WWE ran the Cruiserweight Classic, a 32-man single-elimination tournament that took competitors from all over the globe, so long as they weighed 205 pounds or less. For many top international and independent stars - including Cedric Alexander, T.J. Perkins, Kota Ibushi, and Gran Metalik - it represented their first time working with WWE.

The tournament was ultimately a huge success, and before it finished, there was talk of doing a similar contest for women. That "Women's Classic," or whatever it ends up being called, is supposed to hit the WWE Network in 2017.

There's no doubt that there'll be plenty of stars available to make the tournament another winner, but according to most, the best female wrestler who's not already in WWE is the ace of the Stardom promotion, Io Shirai. A few weeks ago, it looked like a given that Shirai (who can be seen in Lucha Underground performing as Hitokiri) and her main rival, Kairi Hojo, were coming to WWE. Those rumors have cooled down a bit and things are up in the air, but to make the tournament really work, WWE needs Shirai. Hopefully, they sign her and give her the victory.
