Retired from March 24, 1991 to December 3, 1991

It's one of the most iconic moments in WrestleMania history: a newly-retired Macho Man hoisting Miss Elizabeth in elation. The path to get there though was long and grueling.

The Ultimate Warrior and Savage had fought tooth and nail in a match where whomever lost would be forced to retire. Despite his efforts and carrying Warrior through his most competitive match, Savage was pinned and, per the stipulation, the Macho Man retired but not before reuniting with Elizabeth as fans in the LA Memorial Sports Arena openly cried in joy. What a woman, and what a man.

It was very much Savage's intentions to stay retired and take-up commentary duties, and although he performed a couple of one off matches he stayed true to his word. Unfortunately, WWF was in a rough state in terms of star power. The Ultimate Warrior was fired a few months after 'Mania, and Hulk Hogan wasn't as popular as he once was, so Randy was brought back for a feud with Jake Roberts after 'The Snake' crashed his wedding reception. The match was used as one of the big draws for the infamous This Tuesday In Texas PPV in December 1991.

Ironically, Savage was forced to remain on commentary until a 1994 exit for WCW that triggered by his motivation to still compete.
