10 Strangest Times Wrestlers Turned Up In Character Outside Of Wrestling
5. Lou Albano - Lie Detector
During the late 1990s, one of FOX's more popular television specials was a show called Lie Detector. By large, it was a show that asked shady people even shadier questions. Suspected criminals and the like were all interrogated while hooked up to a polygraph test machine. The hosts would then switch from good cop to bad cop, often using the results to pressure the guest(s) into some sort of reveal. Since the show dealt with only the most serious topics, it seemed natural to have a professional wrestler join the fray.
In a 1998 episode, Captain Lou Albano appeared to defend his profession as the hosts set out to prove pro-wrestling was "fake" once and for all. And they treated it as though wrestling was a big-league scam.
Besides Albano's regular use of "whack" during the interview, what caught viewers' attention was his refusal to admit professional wrestling was "fixed" to any degree, no matter how many times he was pressed.
Agreeing to answer the same questions while hooked up to a polygraph, Albano maintained wrestling was a real sport. What made his appearance on the show the stuff of legends was how Lou flipped his lid after being told he lied. His overreaction and the host's no-sell may have seemed suspicious (surely, the show wasn't a work), but the memory of Captain Lou calling the producers, hosts, and even the polygraph machine liars will live on forever nonetheless.
