10 Terrible WWE Ultimatums From Vince McMahon
5. Edge & Matt Hardy
Vince McMahon raised some eyebrows when he decided to bring Edge and Matt Hardy's real-life problems into WWE television in 2005. WWE released Matt Hardy over his conduct on social media after he found out his friend Edge was having an affair with his long-time partner, Lita, behind his back. It resulted in an uproar among the fans, who started chanting for Matt Hardy and aimed jeers at Edge and Lita during events.
Since the backlash damaged Lita's ongoing storyline with Kane and Edge, McMahon had to rehire Matt Hardy and turn their real-life hatred into a storyline. Hardy returned to WWE in July 2005 and found himself in a match against Edge at SummerSlam.
Fans looked forward to their match, and speaking on his podcast, "The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy," Hardy recalled Vince McMahon calling him and Edge to a meeting before the event. The boss laid down the law by warning them not to take liberties in his ring by trying to harm each other intentionally.
