AEW's formation took the wrestling world by storm back in 2019. Literally everybody was talking about it, and WWE's locker room was no different. Adam told Renee that he was in a bit of a weird spot, because some of his best friends (The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega, to name a few) were going to be heavily involved behind the scenes.

Cole watched everything AEW did from day one.

He noticed how happy his pals were, and loved the buzz of fans in arenas. AEW had a unique, souped-up independent wrestling vibe, and that played a huge role in Cole's eventual decision to leave WWE. Everything came to a head during that 1am epiphany, but the cards fell into place neatly too.

His WWE contract was running out, so he wouldn't have to sit on a 90-day non-compete clause. AEW's All Out 2021 pay-per-view was happening just a few days after that contractual lapse too. Everything lined up perfectly for Cole to make a splash.
