On 2 July 1998, Bill Goldberg was all cosied up on the couch at home watching WCW Thunder. He wasn't on the show, and he wasn't aware of what he'd be doing the following Monday for Nitro. That's when WCW announced that the 6 July episode would feature Goldberg challenging Hollywood Hogan for the World Title.

'Come again?', gasped Goldberg.

Four days before the biggest match of his pro career to that point, Bill hadn't been told about plans to make him the new WCW World Champ. He literally had no clue WCW were even thinking about it, and quips that Eric Bischoff was in charge without really being in charge of things around that time. Creatively, WCW operated at short notice.

The champion elect found out about Nitro's hook when every other wrestling fan watching Thunder did. He didn't receive a phone call at home, and he didn't get any word on what the deal was until he landed in Georgia the following Monday afternoon.
