This is seriously grim, so be warned.

Jarrett was cutting a promo backstage when his friend Owen Hart was wheeled past on a stretcher. It's a sick coincidence that his match was next on the format after Owen's tragic fall from the rafters at Over The Edge 1999, and it's even more cruel that Jeff had no clue as to the extent of Hart's injuries.

He'd heard someone shout, "He fell" and thought they meant from the top rope or something. Feeling bad, Jarrett muttered: "Aw man, his knee's screwed up" then went to work; Owen had been going through some problems with said knee, which is why Jeff wondered if he'd tweaked it mid-match.

It wasn't until Jarrett got to the ring and saw the crease in the ring canvas that he realised something very bad had happened to his buddy. Everything just seemed so surreal, especially when people finally got word to Jeff about what had happened.

Afterwards, still wearing his ring gear, he went to the hospital in a cop car and begged the policeman for info from the back seat.
