It's hard to think of Lawler without his 'King' gimmick.

When Austin asked how that all came about, Jerry launched into a tale that'd be fortunate for him but tragic for someone else. Down in Memphis, he cut a promo on regional hero Jackie Fargo and closed with, “You’ve been the king of Memphis for a long time, but you’re looking at the kid who’s gonna’ knock you off your throne!”. He went over that night, and some kid called him "King" outside after the matches.

Jerry didn't think too much of it until he spotted a worker called Bobby Shane strolling into the locker room with a crown and robe. He asked where he could get stuff like that, thinking it'd be funny to work a one-off segment mocking Fargo, and Shane told him he was off on a month-long tour of Australia so Lawler could borrow his.

Shane would never get his stuff back. He sadly died in a plane crash before touching back down in the United States, and Lawler kept wearing his gear in tribute. Eventually, he'd get his own made and move on.
