10 Things We Learned From Something Else To Wrestle With: WrestleMania 14
1. Bret Hart Vs. Steve Austin Was A Tentative Main Event Plan
Conrad raised an interesting theory when he pointed out that things had been very different in WWE just six-nine months before WrestleMania XIV. At SummerSlam 1997, Bret Hart became the new champion by beating The Undertaker, and future titleholder Steve Austin suffered a broken neck on the same show.
At that point in time, WWE can't have known that Austin vs. Michaels was nailed on for 'Mania.
Prichard is willing to admit that it wasn't. Back then (unlike the Spring of '98), WWE had a backup in mind. The tentative, pencilled-in plan was to book another Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart match in Boston and crown Stone Cold champ by beating an old rival. That was despite Austin's career-threatening injury.
When Hart was then expelled from the promotion at Survivor Series 1997, focus shifted to Michaels vs. Austin. Bruce concedes that, had the "Montreal Screwjob" not happened, a more likely match would have been Bret vs. Austin.
Who knows what the plan might have been had Austin not recovered in time.
