Unless you have a talker like The Rock on your side, it’s probably a bad idea to open your professional wrestling show with a lengthy in-ring talking segment. That hasn’t stopped WWE clinging to a tired formula for years and years, to the detriment of Raw and SmackDown alike.

Brock Lesnar vicious beatdown of Rey Mysterio and his son Dominic made for an entertaining and brutal alternative on Monday night. ‘The Beast Incarnate’ was nasty and unrelenting even by his own standards with even his advocate Paul Heyman looking appalled.

Yes, there was the caveat that we lost Mysterio vs. Rollins but it also set up everything that followed, from a great Heyman backstage promo to Brock’s decisive victory over Kofi Kingston and Rey’s last minute return with a friend in tow. There were mistakes in between but WWE managed to start and end “Premieres Week” on a high.
