10 Things WWE Are Getting Absolutely Right At The Moment

4. A Crowd-Pleasing King

For the first time since Edge in 2001, the King of the Ring Tournament has produced a benevolent fan favorite as monarch, and as crazy as it sounds, it’s been received pretty well.

Xavier Woods has been lobbying for literal years for WWE to reinstate the event and place his name among the bracket for the opportunity to become King. He’s even made it clear that it was a bigger goal for him than the WWE Championship itself (though he probably wouldn’t mind having that in his trophy case as well when he calls it a career). In the lead-up to Crown Jewel 2021, the company finally relented and there was much rejoicing in the land. After working through a tournament populated by fellow fan favourites, indie darlings and Jinder Mahal, another ‘boyhood dream’ was realized and King Woods ascended his rightful throne.

What makes this reign work better than most? The presentation feels extremely authentic. Whereas most previous kings wore the crown merely as a title or a prop with no direct line back to their original character, everything; from the coronation, to the knighthood of Sir Kofi (complete with solid gold unicorn pendant) is very much an extension of the characters in a way not seen perhaps since ‘Macho King’ Randy Savage himself. In fact, the only aspect of The New Day that has been sacrificed along the way is WWE Champion Big E being on RAW, still awaiting his own knighting ceremony.

Perhaps at Survivor Series.
