10 Things WWE Can Learn From Wrestle Kingdom 12

2. Secondary Belts Matter

Emboldened by the memory of Stone Cold and The Rock warring over the IC Title at the dawn of the Attitude Era, fans have been crying out for WWE to make proper use of its secondary belts for at least the last decade.

For the most part, we continue to be disappointed. The latest attempt to bring prestige back to the US and Intercontinental straps seems to be centred around having nominal main eventers like John Cena and Roman Reigns climb down to the mid-card - which is great on paper, except that they rarely seem all that interested.

In sharp contrast, Hiroshi Tanahashi - one of the biggest stars in NJPW history - was last week only too happy to contest the Intercontinental Championship, a title which has previously headlined Wrestle Kingdom, with Jay White.

Meanwhile, Will Ospreay won the Junior Heavyweight crown after a pulsating 20-minute clash with Marty Scurll, Hiromu Takahashi and Kushida, another match that appeared to carry much more significance than its WWE equivalents.
