10 Things WWE Got Horribly Wrong In 2016
7. Premature NXT Call Ups
One of the major talking points ahead of the 2016 WWE draft was the subject of who would be called up from NXT. The developmental roster was stacked to say the least, and a number of stars seemed primed to get the call. Performers such as Finn Bálor and American Alpha were subsequently drafted, to the joy of viewers worldwide.
The WWE Universe was less excited about the other draftees however. Nia Jax was still developing down in NXT, and her jump (alongside Alexa Bliss and Carmella) left a gaping hole in NXT’s women’s division. For all his enthusiasm Mojo Rawley was simply at the bottom of the ladder in NXT, and his call-up still baffles to this day.
Earlier in the year a number of NXT performers arrived on the main roster after WrestleMania, and whilst Enzo & Big Cass were clearly ready for such a move the same can’t be said for Apollo Crews and Baron Corbin. The NXT journeys of those two felt incomplete, and the lack of direction since coming to the main roster smacks of call-ups without a plan.
All the while seasoned veterans like Samoa Joe, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Austin Aries continue toiling away in NXT. 2017 will see more making the jump from NXT to the main roster, and WWE simply must be better at deciding who is ready and who is not.
