10 Things WWE Got Right At WrestleMania 33

7. The Ultimate Set Design

This might seem like a minor detail, but WrestleMania 33’s set design was fantastic. The roller-coaster backdrop was effective, but surprisingly subtle – it didn’t distract from entrances or action by being a large, garish eyesore, and it coincided well with the show’s Ultimate Thrill Ride gimmick.

The Titantron, on the whole, did a great job of enhancing each Superstar’s entrance without simply being a one-size-fits-all toolkit of sorts. WWE’s modern trend of having a universal staging area draws a lot of ire from fans, since it always looks the same, and doesn’t give PPVs/RAW/Smackdown a great sense of individuality or identity. But WrestleMania 33’s set had a great deal of personality – it was summery without being Summerslam-y, and the addition of several impressive firework displays added an extra level of grandiosity to proceedings.

It was also a stroke of luck that the weather generally behaved itself too, even after an initially windy start during Neville vs Aries. Although outdoor matches always come across a little weird, the impending twilight created the perfect atmosphere for The Hardy Boyz return, while The Undertaker and Bray Wyatt appeared late enough in the night that their entrances weren’t harmed by an overabundance of natural light.
