Love him or hate him, John Cena has done a pretty good job of making the US Title mean something again. It wasn't long ago that Dean Ambrose held it for nearly a year, with the belt going months at a time without being defended. At WrestleMania 31, Cena captured the gold and has put on a string of pretty entertaining matches. The title is now relevant. Well done. So what's the problem? For one, Cena is running out of opponents. Fast. Yes, it's noble of him to want to defend the belt every week, but he's already gone through half the roster. The other issue is, Cena needs to be back in the top mix again. While that thought may anger many long time fans, he's still the biggest draw in the company, and the ratings are hurting. It's a simple fix to get more people watching. From a pure character standpoint, he should probably get re-involved with The Authority story (if they must stick around) since they're kind of, sort of, you know, destroying the company he loves! WWE should pick someone to topple Cena in a match, which would give them a huge amount of momentum. It could be Kevin Steen in a rematch, or an attempt at making Ryback a star again by holding both secondary belts. Or, perhaps a call-up like Finn Balor could become a star right out of the gate by winning the US Title in his first match. Cena has done a solid job with the belt, but at the end of the day, he's just too big for it.
As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at."
Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week.
