10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About SummerSlam

2. Ultimate Warrior Got Fired After SummerSlam 1991 Due To Money Reasons

The last match at SummerSlam 1991 was a tag match with the babyface team of Hulk Hogan & Ultimate Warrior teaming up to take on Sgt. Slaughter, Colonel Mustafa (Iron Sheik) and General Adnan. Hogan already beat Slaughter for the WWE Title at WrestleMania 7 earlier in the year while Warrior was the guy that dropped the gold to Slaughter, so they were able to take him on in a tag match here. The referee was Sid Justice, who was in a babyface role at this point. While the match was a predictable win by the babyface side, what was most noteworthy about it was that the Ultimate Warrior left WWE immediately after the show. What happened was Vince McMahon suspended him because Warrior threatened to no-show if he didn't get money he felt was owed to him (he claimed it was $500,000). McMahon agreed to pay him in a letter that was seven weeks before SummerSlam and was published online earlier this year. Things changed immediately after SummerSlam when McMahon fired him due to his threats of not showing up. Warrior ended up showing up and his team won the match although he wasn't even around for the finish. Warrior chased Mustafa & Adnan away while Hogan pinned Slaughter to win for his team. It was a bitter breakup for Warrior and McMahon although Warrior returned at WrestleMania the following year. A main eventer getting fired right after one of the biggest shows of the year is definitely something that WWE wants us to forget about SummerSlam.
