10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About SummerSlam
9. Yokozuna Breaks Top Rope At SummerSlam 1996
Yokozuna is one of the biggest wrestlers ever. By the time he got to SummerSlam 1996 and the "free for all" match with Steve Austin he looked as heavy as he's ever been. We don't know the exact weight, but Vince McMahon said on commentary that he was 660 pounds. That's probably 100 pounds more than he really was, but the point is that he was really huge. This was near the end of Yoko's career. He was heel taking on Austin and the crowd was supporting Yoko. He hit a Samoan Drop followed by a Leg Drop on Austin. Yoko went for his Banzai Drop, but as he was climbing up the ropes the top rope was completely ripped off. The announcers reacted to it like it was a work and Austin covered for the win. The reason it's something WWE wants us to forget is because when you book a guy to lose a match because he's too fat to actually take bumps then you probably shouldn't book the match in the first place. By the way, Austin should not have been on the "free for all" after winning King of the Ring and having all kind of momentum. That was a problem with WWE in 1996. The midcard wasn't very strong. Thankfully things got better.
