From 2012 onwards, appearances by Doug Williams on TNA television started to become less and less frequent. Talking to WrestleTalk TV about the situation shortly after leaving the company, Doug himself outright stated that he was put in Ohio Valley Wrestling as a trainer because the creative team had nothing for him.

TNA had started to move away from The British Invasion, positioning Magnus as more of a singles wrestler. Then, his old partner was was placed in a team with Samoa Joe, something that must have baffled Williams. He was raring to go, fit and healthy, but also didn't see much harm in working with youth in OVW.

With years of experience under his belt, he was perhaps the ideal member of the TNA roster to head to OVW and help out. Sporadic matches were then booked on Impact Wrestling featuring Doug, but he was never a full-time member of the TNA roster again.

Remarkably, he defeated his former stable mate Rob Terry to become OVW Heavyweight Champion in January, 2013, but only held the belt till April.
