In November 2004 Vince McMahon decided that The Dudley Boys had been overexposed on WWE TV over the last couple of years and that they could use a vacation. The term 'hiatus' was mentioned. Even if they were miffed at losing out on money, the duo probably recognised that Vince was right and that their absence would, ultimately, make fans' hearts grow fonder. So they went off to OVW and began helping to train younger talent while waiting for a storyline and a call to return.

The next time WWE felt they needed to use the Dudley's services was for the main event of One Night Stand. The match (against Tommy Dreamer and The Sandman) was their last together in WWE. After the show, WWE broke off contract extension negotiations with The Dudleys and they were released. Two months after ONS, WWE served the Duds with legal notices, informing them that they could no longer use the 'Dudley' name, causing the two sides to be at odds with each other.

Bubba Ray and D-Von did eventually return to WWE for a one year reunion run between 2015-2016.
