10 Things You Didn't Know About The WWE Title
Fascinating facts about WWE's top prize and the biggest belt in pro wrestling.
Think you know everything there is to know about WWE's richest prize?
There's no doubt the wrestling community is full of people who know their stuff, but even the biggest fact-hunters in the land might be surprised by some of the stats and stories here. You'll find out which year holds the record for most top title changes, which elite group of five wrestlers get to brag about something nobody else can, and more.
Much, much more, in fact. For example, did you know that The Undertaker made company history when he captured the WWF Title from Hulk Hogan way back at Survivor Series 1991? That wasn't just 'Taker's first major title win - it was a landmark moment for the strap itself. He'd hold onto the record for around two years before somebody else scooped the glory.
Speaking of records, another legend holds the haul for longest gap between title reigns. A certain Hollywood star runs him close though. Don't bet on anybody else topping their achievements.
Check out these fascinating facts, stats and stories about the richest prize in the industry.
10. The Original Belt Was Stolen
It didn't take long for the title to make headlines.
Iconic babyface Bruno Sammartino was only the second champion when the original belt was stolen from his car in 1965. Bruno was in a restaurant eating when it happened, and authorities never managed to find the strap. So, left with no other choice, the company had to order a new one.
This was obviously less than ideal. Sammartino had beaten Buddy Rogers to win the thing back in 1963, and was in the midst of an impressive 2,803 day reign with the gold. The then-WWWF had to commission another prize, because it just wouldn't do to have strongman Bruno stroll down the aisle without his belt.
The WWWF Title was quickly becoming a symbol of excellence thanks to Sammartino's hard work, meaning this was quite the setback for Vince McMahon Sr and pals. The champ can't even enjoy a bite to eat after defending the title at Madison Square Garden, eh?!
