In 2010, the WWE roster was dramatically affected when several main event talent either retired or became part-timers including Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, Batista and Chris Jericho. Although it didn't become evident until the following year, Triple H later joined that list as well with his final match as an active competitor coming at 2010's Extreme Rules pay-per-view.

At WrestleMania 26, Triple H bested Sheamus in one-on-one action, but The Celtic Warrior sought retribution in the weeks that followed. Looking to establish himself as a threat to the WWE Championship, he targeted the very best he could find, and that was The Game.

A Street Fight between the two took place at Extreme Rules, but before the bout could even begin, Sheamus assaulted HHH backstage, putting his status for the match into question.

Triple H pulled through and was persistent on competing, though his courage would cost him the victory. Sheamus viciously assaulted his rival with five brutal Brogue Kicks to the skull, ensuring he didn't walk out of the area under his own power.

This was done to write him out of storylines indefinitely, as he was set to undergo surgery that summer. When he returned in time for WrestleMania 27, it became clear he'd only wrestle on occasion and not every week.
