10 Things You Learn Binge Watching Every WWE Raw From 2008
9. Michael Cole Was The Future, But…
…WWE didn’t need to pull the rug out from underneath JR’s feet by shifting them during the 2008 Draft on 23 June.
That was crappy, and totally unnecessary. Really crappy and really unnecessary. Cole has since proven himself as “the voice” of the company, but Vince McMahon went out of his way to humble and embarrass Jim Ross publicly yet again. That's something the then-boss had made a habit of for years, and it never sat well with WWE's hardcore fanbase who adored the cowboy hat-wearing soundbite machine.
Ross was caught completely off guard when his name and graphic flashed up on screens during the Draft picks. He was off to SmackDown, and the man legit looked like he was ready to bust some heads then walk out when the announcement was made. Bell's Palsy has robbed JR off most facial expressions, but it wasn't difficult to see how steaming mad he was about all of this.
Jim wrote in one of his books that he didn't see it coming at all. He felt comfortable on Mondays, and thought his team with Jerry Lawler was part of the furniture on the flagship. Pretty much everyone else agreed, but McMahon wanted to shake things up and take another jab at Ross for...reasons.
There's a definite shift in how Raw comes across when binging and seeing Cole replace JR. Lawler never felt as vibrant when sitting next to Michael either. In fact, his slow slide into babyface commentary became more of a hindrance than it had been next to longtime pal Ross.
Someone should've suggested that Jerry start heeling it up so Cole had someone to bounce off of.
