The rivalry between 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper and Bad News Brown has been highlighted before as one that failed to truly hit the mark. Who could ever forget Piper's ramblings at WrestleMania VI, bizarrely painting half of his body and face black and wearing a 'Michael Jackson glove' as Gene Okerlund looked on unperturbed.

At 'Mania, Piper and Brown had a limp brawl that only lasted around 7 minutes and ended in a disappointing double count out. The beginning of their main issues at the Royal Rumble promised much more than that. Fans were loud and interested when both men brawled to the back as various officials attempted to separate them.

Having been eliminated by 'Hot Rod', Bad News decided to pull Roddy to the outside from the ring apron. It was a promising start, but the pedestrian events of WrestleMania ruined the entire thing.

If the WWF had simply let Piper score the win at 'Mania (or even allowed the heelish Brown to win), things would have felt much more satisfying overall. A concrete decision was needed.
