Following his SummerSlam effort with The Undertaker, Bret Hart worked only 4 more pay-per-view matches for the WWF. One of those came against 'The Deadman' again, occurring in the United Kingdom as part of the One Night Only show.

Elsewhere, Bret faced The Patriot at In Your House: Ground Zero, teamed with The British Bulldog to face Vader and The Patriot at In Your House: Badd Blood, and then infamously clashed with Shawn Michaels at the 1997 Survivor Series pay-per-view. Looking back over the last stretch of his original WWF run, it's fair to say that Hart didn't top what he achieved with 'Taker at SummerSlam in August.

With Michaels as the special guest referee, both men produced a striking headliner. Then a heel due to his ongoing association with The Hart Foundation and bitter promos against the United States, Bret won the WWF Heavyweight Title from Undertaker on the show.

Even without the melodrama of Michaels vs. Hart, the SummerSlam main event would have been vital. Although 'Taker and Bret worked hard at One Night Only, they couldn't better their own previous effort.
