10 Things You Need To Know About Kenny Omega

4. A Videotape Got Him Booked In Japan

Omega came across the Japanese promotion Dramatic Dream Team (DDT) in 2006, when a copy of a DDT show was thrown into a videotape bundle The Cleaner had bought for further study and research. Omega was captivated from the start, although anyone seeing a ladder match involving a monkey doing a crossbody can be forgiven for being more than a little hesitant.

Kota Ibushi in particular impressed Kenny, and it was a video challenge that Omega made to Ibushi that got him noticed big time in Japan. Omega filmed himself having a DDT-style match outside the confines of the ring, a bout that culminated in Omega laying out the challenge to Ibushi. DDT officials were suitably impressed, and the match was on.

Thus began Kenny Omega's wrestling journey in the Land of the Rising Sun, a journey that continues to this very day.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
