10 Things You Need To Know About Past WWE Road To WrestleManias
6. Austin Won't Work With Hogan
There are few bigger dream matches than Austin versus Hogan. WWE knew this and unsuccessfully tried to make it happen on a few different occasions. The first occasion was WrestleMania X8. Hogan returned to the WWF along with fellow nWo members Kevin Nash and Scott Hall and people immediately began fantasy booking. Hogan was definitely a name that the WWF could have used during the Invasion storyline. Fans wanted to see Hogan versus Triple H, Stone Cold, The Undertaker and The Rock. The WWF wanted Austin and Hogan for 'Mania. It was the biggest match of all time featuring the two biggest stars of all time Austin, sensing that he wouldn't get anything out if in the long run and that Hogan would do his damnedest to upstage him, declined the opportunity. The spot went to The Rock and, true to form, Hogan stole the show from under The Great One. Austin dodged a bullet there. The next time the match was seriously discussed was for WrestleMania 22 in Chicago. Hogan threw out the challenge on the 2005 Raw homecoming show and, after hearing the crowd's reaction, Vince approached both sides about doing it. Again, Austin turned the WWE down. When inducting Bret Hart into the Hall of Fame the night before 'Mania, Austin acknowledged the 'Austin-Hogan' chants by taking a shot at Hogan. Again, the audience roared in approval. It's hard to know how close we got to seeing Austin versus Hogan but as recently as last year Hogan was calling Austin out and challenging him to a match.
