10 Times A Major WWE Championship Changed Hands On "The Road To WrestleMania"
1. The Rock Def. Kurt Angle For The WWF Championship (No Way Out 2001)
Another WrestleMania, another Rock-Austin match set-up at the last minute.
Stone Cold Steve Austin won his third Royal Rumble in 2001, setting up what many thought would be a match with WWF Champion, Kurt Angle.
Angle had one obstacle to overcome before this match was made official - Austin's old rival, a babyface Rock.
Whilst Austin faced Triple H in a Three Stages of Hell match, Rock took on Angle in the main event of No Way Out 2001 with the title on the line.
In what was a fantastic match between two legends, Angle and Rock took each other to the limit before Rock hit Angle with a Rock Bottom to pin him and win the match. Angle's 126-day reign was over and Rock had secured himself another showdown with The Rattlesnake at WrestleMania.
If Angle had won this match, then WWE could still have pulled off an Angle-Austin match at 'Mania. But everybody wanted to see The Rock win and have his rematch with Stone Cold.
Thankfully, this is exactly what happened, because whilst Angle vs. Austin would have been a good match, it wouldn't have been the absolute classic that we ended up with.
