If ever there was a man synonymous with wrestling in the late '90s and early 2000s, it's Stone Cold Steve Austin.

The ‘Texas Rattlesnake’ and Jim Ross branded ‘toughest S.O.B’ in the WWE was, in his prime, one of the biggest draws we have ever seen in professional wrestling. Not since the days of Hulk Hogan had fans been whipped into a frenzy like they were when the glass shattered and Steve Austin marched to the ring.

Stone Cold is arguably responsible for some of the biggest pops of all time. Again and again he blew the roof off arenas, something which is somewhat of a rarity in today’s WWE product. His charisma, attitude, and carefree persona resonated with the average WWE fan of that time.

Whether it be a pre-booked appearance, a big match win, or the ever beloved shocking return to action, Stone Cold has had us wrestling fans off our feet and cheering like mad on plenty of occasions.

Austin’s first WWE title win and WrestleMania moment came all the way back in 1998, but it still lives long in the memory.

The main event of ‘Mania saw the increasingly popular Austin come up against Mr WrestleMania himself, Shawn Michaels. Billed as one of the biggest occasions in WWE history and with an interesting side story involving Mike Tyson, all the pieces were in place for a top class main event.

After both Michaels and Austin delivered for just over 20 minutes of solid in ring action and with the referee knocked out, Austin hit the stunner on Michaels, ‘special enforcer’ Tyson swooped in to count the 1-2-3, and the Boston crowd went nuts.

Jim Ross proclaimed at the time that ‘the Austin era had begun’, and he wasn’t wrong. A truly memorable pop and one of the most prominent moments in WWE history.
