By the time Bill Goldberg made his WCW debut in 1997, Hulk Hogan had already experienced the most lucrative period of his career. Another successful tenure had since started, this time as a figurehead of the nWo. Switching things up, Hogan was now more Hollywood and a darker persona than ever before.

Whereas Hogan relied on flash and character, Goldberg was more of an intense, no-frills kind of individual. Fans cottoned on to his act swiftly, enjoying the quick satisfaction of his squash-style matches, and reveling in the rise of a new phenomenon they could get behind.

A match against Hogan seemed like an organic direction. Goldberg was so hot by the Summer of 1998 that he was booked to clash with Hollywood for the WCW World Title in front of some 40,000 fans on Monday Nitro.

Announcers questioned whether Goldberg's winning run would come to an end against the crafty veteran, but Bill eventually rolled over the top of Hogan to the delight of fans.

The match had been finely poised between wrecking ball rookie and one of wrestling's biggest names, it must be regarded as one of WCW's finest hours.
