10 Times UFC Fighters Won In Defeat
5. Alexander Gustafsson (Vs. Jon Jones, UFC 165)
Any fighter that thoroughly tests Jon Jones in the Octagon is worthy of a certain amount of praise and credit. Jones is quite simply one of the greatest to ever step foot into the world of MMA and he's outclassed some of the biggest names in UFC history.
So, when Swedish superstar Alexander Gustafsson put Jones on the back foot early on in their fight at UFC 165, he immediately got everybody's attention.
He followed this up by stuffing Jones' takedown attempts and had an answer for everything that the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion was throwing. Could this be? Were we finally about to see the great Jon 'Bones' Jones lose his belt?
Then, as the fight wore on, Jones began to find his rhythm and caught Gustafsson with his own selection of head kicks and spinning elbows.
By the time the pair had made it to the fifth round, they'd given every last ounce of energy they had in their tanks and the clash was anyone's to win.
Neither fighter knew how to quit, however, and instead the decision was left up to the judges as Jones won the fight via unanimous decision.
Despite losing the contest, Gustafsson had showcased just how tough and complete he was as a top level contender.
There's a reason this fight is about to be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. It's because both men were immortalised forever thanks to their superhuman performances on the night.
If that's not a win then I don't know what is.
