10 Times Vince McMahon Lost Huge Money In WWE

8. XFL Shuts Down - May 10 2001

The XFL was Vince McMahon's attempt at creating a new national football league. It was a 50-50 venture between the WWF and NBC, with the first game taking place on February 1st 2001. The season then concluded on April 21st 2001, with the Los Angeles Xtreme defeating the San Francisco Demons 38 -6 in the championship game. It brought to an end what had been a critically panned season, in addition to an underwhelming commercial performance. With NBC announcing they wouldn't air the planned second season, McMahon was left with little choice but to announce on May 10th 2001 that the XFL was no more. Wrestling profit for the period had been $84,981,000, but WWE's share of the XFL losses was $68,994,000, which meant only a meagre $15,987,000 overall profit for the 2000-01 period. What should have been a record breaking year in the WWF's hottest era was severely undermined by the XFL. McMahon had lost big time on his football fancy.
