10 Times WCW Purposefully Lied To The Fans

9. StarrCade Is On Long Island? No!

Admittedly, this one is a bit personal. Vince Russo won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship on the September 25, 2000 edition of Monday Nitro, shocking the crowd at Long Island's Nassau Coliseum -- and not in a fun way. Still, maybe some good had come out of it for us: that Wednesday on Thunder, in a sit-down interview with Mike Tenay, Russo made two promises -- firstly, that he was going to relinquish the belt on Nitro (I guess he'd proven his point, or something), and secondly, that StarrCade 2000 would be held in Russo's hallowed Nassau Coliseum. I could hardly believe my ears. In those days, WCW came to the New York area far less frequently than the WWF did (the same is true today, now that I think about it). They ran the south, the west, and the midwest, but rarely seemed to get much further northeast than Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. All that was pushed aside, though -- StarrCade was coming. My friends were excited. I was really excited. Finally, I could stop wondering just where the hell Wilkes-Barre was. Of course, it never happened. Russo left WCW shortly after that angle, and StarrCade ended up being hosted by Washington, D.C.'s MCI Center, as it had been every year since 1997. Perhaps Russo truly was dedicated to getting StarrCade in his backyard, and it was only his departure that soured the deal. More likely, though, it was never in the cards -- after all, his "promise" was made less than three months before the event. You'd think they would have already had an arena picked out at that point. Either way, Long Island fans were stuck with Islanders games. It was a long winter.
