10 Times WCW Was The Best Wrestling In The World
1. A Dark Avenger
The nWo was one of the greatest villainous factions in wrestling. However, a great villain is nothing without a great hero to conquer them. Following the formation of the nWo, all had failed to slay the proverbial beast. Ric Flair was a better villain despite commanding respect from WCW faithful. Lex Luger was a powerful opponent but never quite captivated the crowd, and DDP's vulnerability was what made him an underdog. When WCW most needed a hero, they got Sting.
Often considered the embodiment of WCW, Sting felt betrayed by his allies for suspecting him of defection. This became a key turning point in the character's trajectory. Sting abandoned WCW, becoming an entity unto himself, watching silently from the rafters. Despite this treachery, Sting's love for WCW never wavered.
Rising like a dark phoenix and wielding a baseball bat as a great equalizer, Sting was an unstoppable force for good, portrayed as the only man who could prevent the destruction of the company. Audiences reacting to Sting's descent from the rafters, his assault of the nWo's lackeys in his chase to get his hands on Hollywood Hogan, and rescuing his former allies were some of the loudest of all time.
It's fair to say that, in fine WCW fashion, the ending to this epic tale was botched at Starrcade 1997. But that doesn't take away from the absolute euphoria that was the lead-in to WCW's greatest match. Fitting that the embodiment of the company should be deserving of its greatest moment.
