Vince Russo's spent the majority of his time at WCW trying to redefine kayfabe and use the fans new knowledge of wrestling's inner workings against them. It didn't go so well. It's hard to tell how much of what happened was planned, and how much was spontaneous, but here goes... Vince Russo was a big supporter of Jeff Jarrett and wanted him to win his WCW World Heavyweight Championship match against Hulk Hogan. Hogan had a creative control clause and decided he didn't want to put Jarrett over. Russo turned this into a story where at Bash at the Beach, Jarrett simply laid down for Hogan to pin him. The plan was then for Russo to fire Hogan, and declare Jarrett the true WCW Champion, with a Champion v Champion match later down the line. When it was time for Russo to cut his promo, Hogan and Bischoff had already left. Russo's tirade against Hogan was extremely negative and inflammatory, and he announced Booker T v Jeff Jarrett for the "real" WCW Title later that night. In the wake of this, Hogan sued Russo for defamation of character but the case was quickly dismissed. It's generally considered that everything up until Hogan leaving was a work, and everything after was a shoot, with Russo double-crossing Hogan knowing he wasn't in the arena. However revolutionary Russo tried to be, it backfired on him by confusing the fans and the boys, as well making sure Hogan never appeared on WCW again.
