10 Times Wrestlers Lost Their Title Belts
3. Bruno Sammartino Has WWWF Championship Stolen
Wow here's a story that's going to ring a few very familiar bells...
In September 1965, the legendary Bruno Sammartino triumphed over Tarzan Tyler in a main event showcase at Madison Square Garden. Feeling the need to celebrate and refuel, he headed down into Manhattan to one of the district's many famous restaurants (I tried looking up exactly where, but that's sadly not recorded. Let's guess pasta or something).
Carrying his WWWF Championship after the show and naturally not wanting to operate a knife and fork with his hanging over his shoulder, Bruno took the precaution of leaving the belt in his car for the evening. Naturally, when he returned, he found that his vehicle had been broken in to and a number of his possessions had been taken. Chief amongst them, the valuable looking championship belt.
Sadly with no social media firestorm to brew up or obvious t-shirt slogans to spin out of it, Bruno could do nothing but file his police report and hope for the best. The belt, to this day, remains at large having never been recovered.
