10 Times Wrestlers Refused To Accept Certain Finishes
5. Ric Flair (1991)
Back in the summer of 1991, a contractual dispute saw Ric Flair go from being WCW World Champion one minute, to being fired by the company the next.
The story goes that Jim Herd, the new Executive Vice President of the company, wanted Flair to lose the title to Lex Luger at the Great American Bash, whereas Flair wanted to drop the belt to Sting having previously promised to do so.
A compromise was reached in that Flair would instead lose the title to Barry Windham in the weeks leading up to the Bash. However, before that match could even take place, and with WCW fearing a no-show by Flair, the Nature Boy was stripped of the belt and with both sides unable to agree terms on a new deal, Flair was fired by the company.
In reality, it wasn’t solely the idea of losing to Luger that saw Flair’s contract talks stall. Herd had wanted the champ to take a 50% pay-cut before changing his name to Spartacus, cutting his hair and getting himself an earring to 'keep up with the times.'
Safe to say, the Spartacus idea didn’t come to fruition, and neither did the match with Luger, with Flair later confirming his opposition to the idea.
